part one of the season finale thoughts? Three plot lines at once, that's interesting. The cliffhanger made some sense considering no one knew who they were, and I do remember something about Cabby not remembering her parents. Actually now that I think of it, it's really funny that <SPOILER> is essentially everyone's parent.

I’ll hold judgment until we get the full product. I will touch on an issue I have with this and ToF alongside a certain plot point of this episode. • The dialogue feels… Way too on the nose… In a way that doesn’t sound natural? It’s common for object shows to have awkward dialogue, but in a show as serious as this it can really break immersion. I understand II is a kids show, but I feel if you want to spell out the character’s arcs and actions… Don’t do it constantly? Even putting that aside, lines tend to feel very bloated. You can get the message across with just a few words. The scene where Paper scolds OJ and Mephone4’s instructions are the most notorious examples of this. • The twist isn’t very good. It’s not that it came out of nowhere: You can see Fan glitching in “Hatching the Plan”. There was attention brought to Mephone4’s ability to create things. It’s that it’s detrimental to the season’s themes. One of the themes is that the game has an impact on the lives of the contestants even outside of it. That’s why OJ is obligated to fill in the role of caretaker as manager of the Hotel. And the reason why Balloon was unable to move on with his life after the first season. Having the contestants be artificial with no real background loses that impact. Especially with all of the personal connections they have with one another. I understand the twist is a way to play with most object show characters not having any backgrounds or motivations to win, but it’s been done in other shows before. And sometimes in a way that accommodates for the story it wants to tell. II is just the most popular show to do the twist.
Again, not much else I can say without the rest of the acts.

Like a divine creator instead of being a literal parent.

mang maybe im just ii-ed out but this episode was real wishy washy for me, just didn't like the twist, not a lot of the jokes were funny (like i love lightbulb so much but hush hush girl it REALLY ruined the mood for me) and man i just was feeling dread the whole time. though id say the highlight for me was when we saw bow/dough/marsh/nd apple again haha. i think they are a very sweet group and the new VAs have done a great job!
other than that, no other thoughts from me . just kinda ok

Ah yes!! I never really liked Paper's depiction in fanon and even some subsequent II works(like Jackbox, even if not canon), so it was nice seeing Paper be something other than a nervous wreck and OJ's yes man. If that makes sense. The two definitely did feel like a married couple here LOL.

Though regarding the twist itself, it feels contrived in a way that it makes everything in the show feel entirely manufactured by Mephone. It does fit in with the theme of reality shows and how scripted they are irl, but the strange thing was how no one (or not a lot of people) predicted that this is the outcome. It makes me think that the setup is shallower than it seems despite how many references it has to the past. There were glimpses of this theory during III where Mephone inexplicably ends up on an island mid season but it seems to handwave certain writing/design choices. Like how people would think that Suitcase's trauma was a projection from Mephone, or in a worse case, why Paintbrush's gender was undecided for a long time. It removed character autonomy that was built for years due to everyone being projections of Mephone.
This is still part 1 of the finale so I cant fully judge it just yet, though I have a feeling that they're going to try to redeem Mephone and make Cobs take the L somehow.
