Though regarding the twist itself, it feels contrived in a way that it makes everything in the show feel entirely manufactured by Mephone. It does fit in with the theme of reality shows and how scripted they are irl, but the strange thing was how no one (or not a lot of people) predicted that this is the outcome. It makes me think that the setup is shallower than it seems despite how many references it has to the past. There were glimpses of this theory during III where Mephone inexplicably ends up on an island mid season but it seems to handwave certain writing/design choices. Like how people would think that Suitcase's trauma was a projection from Mephone, or in a worse case, why Paintbrush's gender was undecided for a long time. It removed character autonomy that was built for years due to everyone being projections of Mephone. It only makes me curious as to how much control Mephone4 has making these characters. Where does the coding end and the contestant's autonomy begin? How do psychological issues such as Cabby's amnesia and Suitcase's hallucinations factor into this? Are they also part of the programming? How so? Exactly how many aspects of a contestant is determined when Mephone4 makes them? It does make me wonder where Mephone4s falls into this, seeing how only one egg made it to Cobs. And it's heavily implied that egg might have went to Mephone4. Who according to a QNA is the only one who can recover life. Was the egg distributed to some of the other Meeple products? There's a lot of questions, and it only makes me wonder how the movie is going to address them.

that reveal was crazy holy shittt Alright now that I've had more time to think about it I got something more substantial to contribute to the conversation with; I feel like the twist of episode 16 failed at trying to do something in the same vein as Hfjone. Not saying that One invented twists in objects shows but it's just that One and II are the two most popular object shows that go for exploring character drama. So I find them comparable. A lot of what makes One interesting is how it plays with object show cliches, but it does this in a carefully planned out way. (Quick disclaimer I haven't rewatched one in awhile excuse me if I misremember some bits). Take for example the reveal of the votes being fake - it adds suspense to the story in the moment, but also adds more depth to the narrative on a rewatch. It makes sense in the grand scheme of things (of course there's no votes, Airy is the only real fan of the show) and foreshadows how the contestants are really trapped. Now on the other hand, "why do we rarely see what contestants do outside of the show's activities?" being answered with "they literally don't have a life outside of the show" is shocking at first, but becomes less satisfying the more you think about it. Bits and pieces that could be interpreted as foreshadowing (ie, box's existence) could also just be. coincidences. It doesn't feel earned y'know. Plus there's what everyone else has brought up about how it raises a lot of questions that weaken parts of the plot.
This video essay talks about a similar thing and it's really well done, I'd recommend giving it a watch.

Am I going to be the one to say it? =L MePhone made a trans person so that he and the rest of the cast could fuck with them, presumably just because he thought it would be funny. He also made several people with disabilities for a similar purpose, and knowing that he would subject them to challenges that they were physically unable to compete in as equals with those who don't have them.
These are stellar qualities to ascribe to a character who you're trying to build up as ultimately sympathetic. /s

Was thinking it too, but I didn't say much since Puncholery briefly brought it up in regards to the twist itself. I do agree it has a lot of implications that the writers didn't take into consideration. I know it's not deliberately malicious or anything, but it is a pattern I've noticed in regards to the writing in the show as a whole. I get where they are going for with all of this, it just feels like what's shown doesn't exactly line up with their ideas... If that makes sense.

I want to make another post on the matter, because I feel like my last one didn't get at "the real problem." My bad. =']
MePhone has never been a morally upstanding person. It's the core of what makes him interesting, and something that I personally enjoyed following while watching S2. He demonstrates some interesting ups (S2E7) and downs (S2E13) when it comes to "improvement" (or the opposite), and as of S2E14, it was like he had been backed into a corner, having antagonized the people closest to him out of his own life and being directly confronted by concepts and people related to Steve Cobs.
S3 is odd insofar as it tries to give MePhone another, similar arc while his S2 one is still incomplete (which is a topic in its own right). Its relevance here is that it lets us know that the writers think of MePhone as sympathetic despite his flaws; the S3 finale episodes make this especially clear. Logically, if your intention is to resolve the series with MePhone being considered as such by most viewers, now is the time where you would really put your nose to the grindstone re: addressing the existing plot threads that involve his less-than-savory attitudes and behaviors. Instead, through this twist, they're deciding to introduce a ton of completely new implications that make him seem like an even worse person.
S2 already has a lot to take care of; focusing on that feels like a decision more likely to deliver a satisfactory end result than introducing even more to take care of at the very last minute. This isn't over yet, so we can't know what the end result that we're getting is like entirely. It's one possibility that they could flawlessly cap off everything involved in the season; it's another that they could fail horribly. This is just a present perspective informed by what we can know so far.

i havent been keeping up with II lately (just kinda lost interest, still a fan of the show but not actively watching new episodes) so i havent watched this one yet. im like... purposefully spoiling myself bc ive been very disappointed with recent II episodes and stopped watching mid-season 3. so i cant speak for myself on the episode's actual quality, but i will say i do find this twist interesting. however... its very near the end of the show, and this twist seems very overcomplicated for something being revealed at basically the last second. as some of you guys have already brought up, the implications are a little iffy and it brings up a lot of questions that im not sure the show will have enough time to answer at this stage. i do understand the decision to leave it for the end of the season, but i dunno, i think its a lot to tackle. when/if i watch the episode for myself i'll come back with my honest opinions but from the sound of it i just really hope they can find a way to cap off the season with a nice little bow. who knows, maybe the finale will be the best thing to ever come out of object shows and im just too blinded by my personal dislike of season 3 to give the return of season 2 a chance
