i like him. i think his entire thing is pretty fun/cool! it's honestly sort of hard for me to choose a One favourite character from any object show because i find myself getting drawn to several, considering how much of object show characterization relies on ensemble cast hijinks and relationships (i.e. i couldn't give you a fave character from bfdi but i can tell you i LOOOVE the freesmarters!). That being said, I think MePhone4 might come close to me for that.
Don't get me wrong!! It's not like I think MePhone4 is any better to me than any other character on the show by virtue of having a lot of focus put on him, I just think he occupies such a fascinating place within the narrative as a host! I think it's cool to think about the entirety of II as this creation by this silly dude who really wants the best for it, despite being somewhat co-opted by higher powers he's sort of at the mercy of, who don't necessarily want the best for him! It's fascinating rewatching II with this reframing lens in mind, like keeping in mind the gradual development of this guy who's just 1 year old and looking at the interactions between him and his contestants. Like I relate to it in a very weird roundabout way with respect to my own artistry as a person, my relationship with my creations + other people around me!
You could argue this is unnecessary characterization that maybe focuses a bit too much on him and thus less on the contestants themselves, but I don't really mind it. I think the way you see the relationship between host/contestants shifts as II progresses is really intriguing, especially as Mephone4 perhaps internalizes his contestants are more like peers to him than he had initially anticipated for them to be, what this means for how he feels about them/their struggles as people + how contestants feel about him/his struggles as a person. What makes a host? What makes a contestant? Is a host above his contestants? Not every object show needs to have their host turn into somewhat of a main character or try to get into Serious Topics in order to be a "Good" object show (is mephone4 a bit of a mary sue? sure! and it's cute :3), different arts should do different things and take the genre it is of into new and interesting places, i just personally enjoy that II has decided this is the route it wants to go.
All this to say, I love MePhone4. I think he, like how contestants fill their own respective niches in personality/relationships, fulfills such a cool role wrt the greater social sphere in a contest. In retrospect on writing this, I could probably generalize this even further and write a whole thing about how I just love hosts in general and how interesting I find the host/contestant dynamic and all the neat places you could take it haha.
Please grant me a bit of grace because I still need to rewatch II2 and III in order to cement my thoughts properly and i have no memory. I just think he's neat :)

Like I relate to it in a very weird roundabout way with respect to my own artistry as a person, my relationship with my creations + other people around me! i agree sooo much. i remember feeling kind of strange about the decision to give him a detailed backstory with cobbs when mine your own business first came out, but after rewatching the entire show when iii ended i feel like it really is interesting and justified in retrospect. you can really feel throughout season 3 especially by the end of the season how tormented he is by the realization that HIS show, inanimate insanity, that he had thought he created on his own as an act of rebellion against cobbs, was actually funded and supported by meeple the entire time. especially with the reveal that he literally never even got a funding for a prize with season 3. it totally makes sense in universe that he just completely abandoned the show he had gotten tricked into making and tried to make a new one instead. goddd idk i just love him so much as a character, he sucks so bad lmfao I think the way you see the relationship between host/contestants shifts as II progresses is really intriguing, especially as Mephone4 perhaps internalizes his contestants are more like peers to him than he had initially anticipated for them to be, what this means for how he feels about them/their struggles as people + how contestants feel about him/his struggles as a person. OMGGG yes this is one of my favorite aspects of his character development. especially comparing s2 mephone, who is basically a dismissive asshole to everyone around him including both of his assistants, to late s3 mephone, the contrast is really clear. i remember them talking in the most recent ii livestream how much better he treated the floor for his loyalty as an assistant than he ever did someone like toilet, and it really is so true. i hope that we get to see mepad and toilet interact with him in the new episode, i mean im sure we WILL but god am i excited for it XDD
the other point ive seen other people make that ive always loved is how much mephone HATED bow, both in season 1 and season 2, contrasted with how bot is seemingly his personal favorite contestant in season 3. it really just goes to show that not only does he see them as different people, but he really relates to bot with their own similar struggle to find personal growth and move past what their creator intended them to be. its just such a cute friendship i love seeing them interact :')
i just love ii so bad and im so glad that they decided to give mephone so much development over the course of this season, even (or especially!) if its all pretty much just individual character growth that won't effect the plot of season 2. hes such a good character :333
