I think it should be discussed regardless of the time... It just so happens that I didn't see any and it's now June.
I'll be honest, I don't really focus much on the topic. I think it's important, I'm just more well versed and focused on other things.
If there's one thing I will say it's that I don't really think there's one way to do it right. There's having a well rounded character who happens to be queer. Obviously putting the information out of universe isn't really good writing. You don't have to say the term directly just convey it in a manner where people can easily pick it up. If that makes sense? I hope it does. And if you are going to explore those topics in the story then do it tactfully. Yeah.
What do you think?

My Most Hardline Take on This Topic is That BFDI is So Far the Only Big Show to Do LGBT Characters Well and This is an Opinion I'd Have If BFDI Hadn't Done Stuff Like Add Two and Profiley (Though They Help). BFDI's Philosophy in Terms of Its Voice Work Where Any Character Can Be Any Gender No Matter The Sound of Their Voice Means a Lot to Me as a Trans Person With an Unusual Voice Myself, and I Think Its the Best Thing in the World When Object Shows Stick to This Attitude in Regards to Their Own Voice Cast. I Feel Like ii is the More Hot Button Show in Terms of LGBT Rep Though to Which I Say, I Think Paintbrush Drops the Bag a Lot in Their Arc But Theyre a Character I Really Like and I Remember That Episode Being Super Huge for Me When I Was 14. I Am Significantly Less Fond of Bot and ii's Rep in General. I Might Elaborate on It Some More But Something About ii's Way of Writing Feels Very... Masturbatory I Guess.

II... Yeah. You know, I really wish in general that people would grasp that someone criticizing something they resonate with isn't a personal attack on them. I get this is a very delicate topic and all but I feel a lot of discussions LGBT rep or not would be a lot less annoying and more insightful if that was the case. With II especially it's a really big deal given that they are open about wanting to write more diverse characters. They mean well, but I'm not going to stick by the newer content with how consistent their issues have been. It doesn't really surprise me that BFDI is the one that pulls it off given what I've seen of the others over the past few years. I don't know if I'm out of The Loop but I feel not confirming your information out of source material is a relatively recent concept. Definitely different from what I saw back in 2020.

Gotta agree with what Pony said above me. I quite like the way gender is treated in BFDI. Besides the algebraliens being genderless, characters like Winner being nonbinary mean the world to me, even If It isn't anything that's discussed in the show. It doesn't have to though! The only time I can remember that being done was with Gaty in TPOT 2, saying that her "girlness" is something she decided for herself. That entire convo between Two and her really spoke to me. The lack of sexual dimorphism (even If it's something as small as having No Eyelashes on girls) is a fresh breath of air too. And the voices too! As a guy with an androgynous voice I like that anyone can have any kind of voice. Now... something that does bother me is that most object shows completely shy away from any kind of confirmed sexualities. Are they too afraid of having genuine romance? Do they not want anyone's headcanons and ships to get deconfirmed? I could go on all day with romance lacking in object shows and how weird it is but that'd be off topic and well, sexuality isn't only about that. So I digress. If I may be a hater for a second: One of the shows I can think of that (allegedly) has gay characters is The Nightly Manor but... where is it? I don't even need GPS and Top Hat to be kissing and hugging on screen but I would've never read their relationship as romantic If It wasn't for Allen's twitter posts about How Gay They Are. Speaking of which, It so rubs me the wrong way to make a show that's apparently all about grief and heavy topics and then I have to find out your characters were Actually Lovers The Whole Time through the creator's teasing it on social media. I would not be suprised If this was something decided on the spot to appeal to the crowd but that's just an assumption with no basis. Just how *I* feel.
TNM generally has this problem I'd say, so maybe at best It's just Allen not knowing how to elaborate on relationships and characters in a way that can hook the viewer in just a few episodes (cuz really, what do we know about them?) but at worst It's bordering on queerbaiting. Feel free to disagree with me, but that's just my opinion as a gay man who would love to see himself in object shows. Maybe the finale will throw us a bone, but If It did, why "spoil" that already? I dunno. Shrug. I don't have high hopes. I'm not the biggest fan of Webz's work but I at least have to respect him for giving us a canonically gay couple and not tip toeing around it. It's nice to see! Broomer and Chalky are a decent couple. Good job. There's other queer characters in the show too but I don't remember too much of what happens to them in regards to that. Legendary adventures forever also has a fairly queer cast, but it's not much elaborated on either. In the case of this show I'm not too bugged by it however. At least Snowy got to blush at another man, haha. And the creator drew these. Pretty cool.

my own object comic has a few queer characters but im not gonna toot my own horn about the rep being amazing or anything. i think something thats really important to internalize is that being queer isnt one uniform, universal experience. what one person sees as horrible representation could be extremely relatable to another, and thats just how it goes. saying this, queer rep isnt something you should just tip-toe around. you dont have to have your character say outright "i am gay" for it to be good, but you also shouldnt just completely avoid discussing your queer character BEING queer. admittedly i havent seen any newer object shows in a while and forgot alot of the ones i have seen cuz of my memory issues. but i definitely agree with yall above me that BFDI does it great. the simple act of having a character just casually use they/them pronouns and it not be a big deal is great. and thats not to say it can NEVER be a big deal, but yknow, its nice to have explicit nonbinary representation without an endless barrage of "gender freak" jokes. (looking at you, ii season 1...) WebzForevz also already got mentioned but having a queer couple on screen is also a really good thing, regardless of how you feel about his work. personally i enjoyed Extraordinarily Excellent Entities but im not the biggest fan of THREEE. THREEE definitely does better than EEE in terms of actually showing Broomer and Chalky's relationship though. i dont think i can entirely blame Webz for not making it explicit in EEE because in his video revealing that deleted scene where every single character is confirmed queer, he said it was deleted because a lot of people were angry at him for having a large queer cast, and i believe he was pretty young at the time, so yeah. sorry if this isnt very elegantly worded btw i really dont have much else to add to what's already been said! my main sentiment really is that the only real "bad" queer rep is queer rep that makes no effort to show even the bare minimum that a character is queer. thats just my personal take! edit: i will also admit here that for a while, the characters of my comic WERE confirmed queer out of universe. recently though i realized how dumb that is. that, in my opinion, is a huge issue in the OSC and indie works in general. everyone wants queer rep, but nobody wants to put in the effort of animating a girl blushing at another girl. if your characters are supposedly queer but its only confirmed outside of the source material, how are people expected to know? thats free reign for headcanons and subsequently people being harassed for those headcanons for not knowing what the creator said on twitter. thats more of a problem with teenagers in fandom tbh. i say that if there isn't confirmation readily available in the source material (or even something related like a canon short or something), then it should be open for interpretation and you, as a creator, need to learn to be okay with that. good queer rep isnt one objective thing, but it certainly can't be good if it doesnt even really exist.

For a long time most of the prominent creators frowned upon it, and it's only just recently that they began to warm up the idea. This stemmed from a lot of poorly written romance plot lines back in the 2013-15 days, but the most notorious was Object Illusion and how it handled it. Needless to say their way of addressing it wasn't any better. It's not headcanons, just that most of them didn't want to or did romance very poorly. Yeah, I couldn't even tell GPS and Tophat were even dating. There is that throwaway line from that one episode but I feel it could have applies to various other characters. In general I feel there could have been subtle moments to hint at it. :P

Oh god I still remember like the old days of my first object show, i was scared to ever confirm if characters were gay or not (i don't think I even knew about the rest of the sexualities until late 2019 maybe? i genuinely don't know how i survived on the internet)
regardless i fucking love LGBT rep, and i always try to throw in stuff that fits a character when I can. Its so fun that I can make unique people and not just [STRAIGHT GUY] or [STRAIGHT GIRL] like i used to

Before I lay any object show-specific thoughts out, I want to be clear re: my general perspective on "representation" in general. This is not required reading, but informs what I'm going to say (spoiler'd for your convenience): - There is no one universal "right way" to include (or otherwise handle) LGBTQ characters, topics, etc. This isn't just about the nature of LGBTQ topics, but art as a whole.
- When a work commits to something (in the case of, say, a published web video series, this is usually the "target audience"), it decides on its own unique guidelines. ex. A public access television series intended for children to view should be expected to keep its contents appropriate for and comprehensible by children.
- "External" context is important to consider when assessing the way that anything is presented, such as who the producer is, what their perspective(s) is/are, etc. (This was called "media literacy" before that become a buzzword rendered vaguely synonymous with "reading comprehension." =P)
- Few things will be perfect. Assessing "good intentions" is difficult, and involves more than just taking what a producer says at face value.
- There is no universal imperative that works include these topics. Whether or a work "should" depends entirely on the specific "guidelines" surrounding it individually, the goal of the work, etc.
I'll start with Battle for Dream Island. BFDI lacks any any romantic narratives, including heterosexual ones; thus, orientation is never involved. I don't think it has to be and therefore have nothing to say about this re: BFDI. Gender is largely superfluous in BFDI, and there is a notable lack of conventional norms in the series (in characters' voices, designs, roles, etc.), which I would consider a related plus. Nonbinary characters are incorporated seamlessly into the world, with no additional attention drawn to their being. The only other trans topic I can think of is Gaty's mention of her "girlness" as a decision made for herself (equated to "periwinkality") in The Worst Day of Black Hole's Life (TPOT E2). Given that the objects seen in BFDI lack any sort of sexual/gender dimorphism, the presentation of gender (to them, at least) as an arbitrary personal accessory akin to paint color is fitting. Overall, BFDI consistently and pleasantly surprises me when it comes to this topic. At this point in my post, I have spared you all 1,559 words regarding LGBTQ representation in Inanimate Insanity. I have exceedingly complicated thoughts on it that might necessitate a different discussion altogether. Most (but not all!) of them are indifferent or negative. Like Pony, I'll get into it if there are any specifics that other people want to talk/hear about. =] WebzForevz has been mentioned by several people here. I can agree that Broomer and Chalky are a nice inclusion. I think him going through all of his characters and assigning them specific labels outside of the show itself is excessive insofar as it does little for anyone (past maybe seeming nice if you're an LGBTQ teenager). This isn't something I want to drag out as a topic, nor is it an indictment of his beliefs today (so behave yourselves), but Webz has an uninteresting history of fringe thought about other trans people (i.e. transmedicalism) that he's seemed to want to overcompensate for since he gave that up in ~2019. I don't think it's wrong to be apologetic (the opposite, actually), but he appears to have expressed this by assigning a slew of labels of his cast (an act removed from the context of the show itself), something that is not only a relatively "nothing" gesture, but takes up time that he doesn't need to waste. Ergo, you probably don't remember much about his other LGBTQ characters because the actual episodes he produces have very little, if anything, to do with them. I think it would be better if he focused on what he wants to include in his episodes instead of doing anything like this on social media/in other videos. While by no means a perfect place (that is not one of the words I would even begin to use to describe it), one quality of the "object show community" that I do find amicable is the overall acceptance of LGBTQ characters. Most object shows in the vein of BFDI aren't going to include topics that exactly highlight some related concepts (ex. what I said about no romance =/= no "visible orientations,") and that's perfectly fine. The ones that do are generally inoffensive (in a good way) and respectful.

At the very least Paintbrush had a personality and motivations, so when III came and got rid of a lot of their nuance I was sorely disappointed... Especially that ONE episode. It's a shame, because while the jokes surrounding Paintbrush were definitely not tasteful and they pretty much got their plot cut short in the second season, they had potential. I can at least understand why this resonated with so many people. I can't really name many other trans object show characters that had this level of relevancy. 7_7

Basically There is Still No Real Reason for People to Care Beyond Possible Drama Because They Have No Personal Experience With It and Will Receive Less Backlash for Ableism Than They Would Trans/Homophobia.

II and BFDI was already brought up so no point in hammering on the specifics of those shows other than we wish there was more nonbinary rep in shows that wasn't like, only transneutral. It's a wide umbrella and while it is good that the neu rep exists! But it so much feels like in minds of writers non-binary starts and ends with static & perfectly neutral identities. It's not even that a lot of not entirely neu NB identities are less known about, stuff like demi-gender & xenic gender is very known about! Not inherently NB, but genderfluid/flux & other kinds of multigender too. Hell even binary trans identities don't really get all too much explicit and undeniable rep in comparison. Seeing orientation related stuff would be cool too and there's a severe lack. The dream is seeing a poly relationship in a show one day. Though we are interested where Cracklin & Chief end up in ION. We're actually not really fully invested in the pairing in show content only lens just yet, but it's been just 3 episodes. Not that "fully invested" means boredom or not relating though, many of us relate hard because we're also autistic, queer and many of us get crushes very easily. Whoops. We wonder if Sylvia's biromanticism will ever come up within the story itself, even if for the tiniest bit. We love her, sorry. Object comics seem to be the thriving ground for queer characters, but fork found in kitchen. Struggling to articulate our thoughts on that, though.
